Encounter at Farpoint (s01e01)

Wow.

So I've been watching a lot of Star Trek: TNG lately, which is part of the reason that this blog was thought into existence. I watch and reflect on each episode and find it extremely satisfying. Fairly regularly.

BUT, I found this episode to be quite painful to watch. As with other series' pilots, you can't really compare it to what the show would ultimately turn out to be.

If tomorrow Shelly decided she wanted to see a whole episode of Star Trek, this episode would not exist on that list.

I would say in principle, it wasn't really in line with the later episodes. Picard was harsh, and more reactionary than the calmer more contemplative captain he would turn out to be. Troi experienced emotion that she "sensed" in crippling fashion. I'd say the acting was on par, but the character traits will soon evolve into the characters I'm more familiar with.

We meet the Q, who condemns humanity for being savages and our Enterprise crew, on its mission to Farpoint, is confronted with proving otherwise. As in every episode, the crew runs into dire circumstances and has to think critically to overcome. It truly happens in each episode, so I'll have to write things more creatively. It wasn't without its particular theme. Humanity has had a rough and savage past. But our Enterprise crew has seen humanity see past our differences and focus on the big picture. Humanity has become a peaceful species interested in peacefully exploring the galaxy.

All for now.
